The history of WhatsApp

15 years of the messaging giant

How it Became One of the Most Popular Messaging Apps in the World

WhatsApp is a messaging app that has become a household name in many parts of the world. It is used by over two billion people in more than 180 countries, making it one of the most popular messaging apps in the world. But how did it all begin?

The Early Days

WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by two former Yahoo employees, Jan Koum and Brian Acton. The idea for the app came about when Koum realized he was missing calls from his family in Ukraine because of the high cost of international calls. He wanted to create an app that would allow people to communicate with their loved ones for free, regardless of where they were in the world.

Koum and Acton initially focused on developing an app for the iPhone, but they soon realized that there was a much larger market for messaging apps on Android. They launched WhatsApp for Android in August 2010, and it quickly gained popularity in countries like India and Brazil, where texting was expensive and unreliable.

WhatsApp’s Growth

WhatsApp’s user base grew rapidly, thanks to its simple interface and reliable messaging service. By 2013, WhatsApp had 200 million active users, and it was handling over 10 billion messages per day. That same year, Facebook made an offer to buy WhatsApp for $19 billion, which was then the largest acquisition in Facebook’s history.

Despite some concerns about how Facebook would use the data from WhatsApp, the acquisition was completed in 2014. Koum and Acton remained with the company, but they eventually left over disagreements with Facebook’s management.

WhatsApp Today

Since Facebook’s acquisition, WhatsApp has continued to grow and evolve. It has added new features like voice and video calls, end-to-end encryption, and the ability to share documents and images. WhatsApp has also become an important tool for businesses, with features like WhatsApp Business allowing businesses to communicate with their customers more easily.

However, WhatsApp has faced some controversies in recent years. In 2018, the app was criticized for its role in spreading fake news during the Brazilian presidential election. And in 2021, WhatsApp faced a backlash after it updated its privacy policy, which led to concerns about data privacy and led many users to switch to other messaging apps.

Despite these challenges, WhatsApp remains one of the most popular messaging apps in the world. It has changed the way people communicate and has helped to bring people closer together, regardless of where they are in the world. The app’s success is a testament to the power of simple, reliable communication tools that meet the needs of users.
