In March, the Apple News app maintained its position as the most widely used news app in the UK, although its lead over the BBC News app continued to narrow, as per Ipsos iris data. About 13.4 million individuals utilized the Apple News app, which is pre-installed on iPhones and has both free and paid versions (Apple News+). In contrast, the BBC News app was used by 13 million individuals during the same month, representing a 9% YoY increase.
In terms of news app usage in the UK among individuals over the age of 15, the Apple News and BBC News apps were the only two that were utilised by more than a quarter of the population. The Apple News app reached 27% of individuals, while the BBC News app reached 26%.
Sky News app secured the third spot in the rankings, surpassing Upday by a slim margin (it was ranked fourth in December). The app was accessed by 2.72 million individuals, in comparison to the 2.67 million who used Upday, a pre-installed app on Samsung phones. Both Upday and Sky News’ apps were used by about 5% of the UK’s online population aged over 15 in March, reaching around a fifth of the audience of the BBC News and Apple News apps.
